The week we’re over the moon (20.1.23)

Heading to the Bake-Off

Last week, we sent various Framestorians to the VFX bake-off: the nerve-wracking process which decides which five films compete for this year’s Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Cross your fingers and send positive thoughts to the teams behind Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore (Christian Manz, Stephane Nazé, and Benjamin Loch) and Top Gun: Maverick (Ryan Tudhope and Bryan Litson), whose incredible talent, skill and artistry has delighted audiences the world over. The official nominees will be announced on Tuesday, January 24th.

We’re everyones fa-VES

Massive congratulations to our talented teams for their well-deserved VES nominations! The VES Awards recognise outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation worldwide in film, animation, television, commercials and video games, and the talented artists who bring this work to life. We’ve got our fingers crossed for the awards ceremony on Wednesday, February 15th!

Flying High with BAFTA

Our Top Gun: Maverick team continue their amazing awards season streak with a BAFTA nomination for Best Special Visual Effects! Congratulations to VFX Supervisor Ryan Tudhope and all who helped Maverick soar to new heights. The BAFTA winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Sunday, February 19th.

The Apocalypse is Here

From the Emmy award-winning creator of Chernobyl and the creator of the acclaimed video game, the new HBO Original series The Last Of Us features some epic work from our VFX team in LDN and FPS. Reviews are also starting to flood in with The Guardian hailing it ‘one of the finest TV shows you will see this year’ and a rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Congratulations to everyone involved – what a great way to start the new year!

Save the Date

Netflix released an official trailer including some of its upcoming titles to watch in 2023 and we can already tell that it’s going to be a fantastic year! Mark your calendars for three titles including Heart of Stone, Leave the World Behind and Rebel Moon which all feature Framestore’s hallmark photo-realistic VFX work from our studios in MTL, VAN, MUM, and MEL. We can’t wait to get our eyes on it!

Raise Your Arches

Framestore joined forces with Leo Burnett UK on McDonald’s latest campaign named ‘Raise Your Arches‘ and directed by cult British filmmaker Edgar Wright. The spot centres on the creative insight that the invitation to grab a Maccie’s is so universal, it can be communicated without a single word. Campaign named the spot its ‘Pick of the Week’ and David Reviews gave it 5 stars. Congrats to the team!

VAN Canucks Game

On Wednesday, some of the VAN team, led by VFX Supervisor Mat Krentz and Head of Production Jinnie Pak, enjoyed a night out courtesy of the VAN Canucks as a thank you for all their hard work on the intro video. It was amazing to see the work on the jumbotron and have some good ol’ fashion Canadian fun! For the Canucks intro video, Director Mike Pohorly wanted to step up the action, and enlisted Framestore to help create some stunning VFX. The VAN team added a CG helicopter to a Mission Impossible like sequence that chases Canucks star Elias Peterson, designed a seamless transition through a wormhole with captain Bo Horvat, added tattoos of every opposing teams logo to a henchman, as well as a CG puck for a slow mo action save from Demko.
