The week for farewells (9.9.22)

The End of an Era

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II marks the true end of an era. Her 70-year represents the longest of any British monarch, and her impact on public life, popular culture and how the British Isles are viewed and understood around the world has been undeniable. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones in this time of mourning.

Thank you Ma’am, for everything.

Paddington and the Queen

While the worlds of blockbuster entertainment and the Royal Family are not ones that often intersect beyond the occasional movie premiere, this year’s Jubilee sketch featuring Paddington Bear was a rare exception. Frank Cottrell Boyce, who co-wrote the sketch, shared some of his fond memories of working with the Queen. He said the monarch had “brilliant” comic timing and describes her as “absolutely glowing” in her appearance alongside Paddington – sentiments we’re sure will be shared by those who worked on the sketch. Show and Tail

This week, Sony presented us with the official trailer for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. The story, based on the beloved book series of the same name features work from our MEL team and is sure to be a whimsical adventure filled with all a crocodile’s favourite things: baths, caviar and song!

1899 at TIFF

The highly anticipated 1899, featuring incredible VFX work by our MTL, FPS, VAN, LDN and MUM teams, will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival, where the first two episodes will air as part of the Primetime programme on the 13th September. To get a feel for this Odyssee, read what CBC entertainment had to say here and don’t miss this teaser!

The Greatest of All Time

Dan Slott, an American comic book writer known for his work with Marvel, shared a short review of Thor: Love & Thunder and we certainly agree with him, the goats are epic!

Art of VFX

This week Art of VFX sat down with MTL’s Pete Dionne & LDN’s Matthew Twyford to discuss Thor: Love and Thunder. The pair get into it all, from the epic ‘moon of shame’ sequence to the stellar environment work behind the Omni City. If you’re curious to know just how they pulled it off, give this a read.

In Other News

The art of Ganesha

In the festive spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi, our MUM studio organised a competition to celebrate the talented artists across all their departments. On Monday 5th September, participants were given an hour to recreate the Hindu God, Ganesha using only pencils and crayons. Congratulations to Modeller Sagar Kudle on winning the competition and to the runners-up, Creature FX Technical Director Bhushan Patil, Roto Artist Kushal Lad & Recruitment Coordinator Srishti Kumari.

Winning Venice

Last week, LDN Digital Matte Painter Carlo Alleva took home the award for best music video at Venice film week. The project titled ‘Entelechy’ (or ‘on the sense of duty’ in Italian) is described as having ‘striking visuals and an abrasive, emphatic soundtrack’ which you can read more about here. Join us in congratulating Carlo on this momentous achievement, and be sure to check out the award-winning project below!

Family Feud

On the 17th September, Euneal Villarama of the MTL Facilities team will be headed to Toronto to compete in season four of Family Feud Canada and we couldn’t be more excited for him. The opportunity is a full circle moment for Euneal, whose family would spend holidays and gatherings playing similar games. They will be competing for a cash prize of $10K and if successful, plan to donate part of the winnings to a local charity. Join us in wishing him the best of luck, and if you are able to tune in, season 4 premieres Monday, September 12 on CBC, 7:30pm EST.

MTL RTO still underway

As part of the return to office, MTL welcomed the Groom team back to the studio this week and we love to see it!

Off to the races in MTL

Meanwhile, the layout department are still in the midst of competition season! After the Burger King contest, the MTL team faced off against each other in an incredibly intense karting race. Congratulations to Layout Technical Director, Eric Desaulniers on winning the title!

Become a mentor with the QFTC in MTL

As part of the ‘VFX-Animation: For an Inclusive and Innovative Recovery Project’, the QFTC in MTL will be implementing a mentoring program for recent VFX-Animation graduates and/or first-time job seekers. Mentees will receive invaluable guidance from industry professionals as they navigate their first steps in the working world of VFX, as well as support in learning and developing their soft skills.

Until we meet again

This week marks the end of the LDN Launchpad internship. For the past 8 weeks, the team of 18 young people have been learning and developing their skills across all our departments, and what a joy it has been to have them with us. Whilst some will be returning to study, five of the team will be beginning their careers with us in LDN. Whatever may be next for these budding creatives, they’ve been a wonderful addition to the Framestore family and we couldn’t be more excited to see where they grow!

Farewell class of 2022, until we meet again.
